Feel Better: Step 7

Minimize emotional numbing

Behaviors, such as addictions, judging and being a workaholic, are strategies that we use to help quiet our racing thoughts. When we are busy and otherwise engaged, we believe that we are able to push back on our negative feelings, emotions and programmed thought patterns. In reality, when you successfully feel numb, even for a short time you ultimately numb all emotions, feelings and sense of self. For example, If we are trying to numb anger, we also numb feelings of love and desire. Coping strategies that are ultimately more successful include determining what experiences in your life bring you joy, awe or peace then balance your life with more of these types of experiences. This balancing act brings us closer and closer to our true selves and teach us where our true passions lie. Oftentimes you will hear folks say that they are looking for work-life balance when what would actually be more helpful is for stress-relaxation balance. If you are spending your life stressed with programmed negative thought patterns, it doesn’t really matter whether you are at work or at home or driving your commute or running on the treadmill. You can make a decision about what you think about.
