Self-care through dance means using movement for mental, emotional, and physical wellness, focusing on joy, release, and self-acceptance rather than perfection, with activities ranging from freeform living room dancing to structured classes, all while nurturing your body and finding community. It involves releasing stress, building confidence, improving body image, and connecting with yourself through music and motion. We talk so much about how trauma is held in the body but joy, bliss, connection, appreciation, and love are also held in the body. We are what we focus on.
How Dance Acts as Self-Care
- Emotional Release: Dance helps process emotions like grief or anger, and reconnects you to joy and playfulness.
- Stress Reduction: Moving to music releases endorphins, reduces anxiety, and helps you focus on the present moment.
- Body Positivity: It fosters a healthy body image by focusing on what your body can do, building confidence and self-acceptance.
- Mind-Body Connection: It increases physical awareness, improves posture, and allows for non-verbal self-expression.
- Community: Group classes or dancing with friends offers motivation, support, and a sense of belonging.
Self-Care Dance Practices
- Freeform Dancing: Put on music and just move as your body feels, without judgment or mirrors (e.g., in your living room).
- Structured Classes: Try a new style (hip-hop, Zumba, etc.) for fun, focusing on learning and enjoyment, not perfection.
- Improvisation: Schedule “improvisation dates” to move freely and authentically.
- Rhythm Building: Start with simple clapping, snapping, and foot-tapping to clear the entry barrier.
- Mindful Moments: Practice self-care before dancing with things that are special to you that help you focus on your awareness of the present moment: set the mood with certain music, light a candle or use special lighting, massage, essential oils, favorite clothing, ground yourself outdoors, hydrate, and appreciate that you’ve set aside this time for your self-care.
Key Mindset
- Let Go of Fear: Release worries about judgment or not being good enough.
- Be Present: Focus on the music and your body’s flow, not external critique.
- Appreciate Your Body: Celebrate what it can do, not what it lacks.
